Abstract

Using formal criteria it is possible to distinguish a distinct type of Berber domestic space, with links to our archaeological knowledge of the rural housing of Roman North Africa. Houses are based on a single large room, with a number of subsidiary spaces for storage or stabling. The type is quite different from the Arab plan, in which we can see a series of roughly equal units grouped around a large courtyard. The A. examines the relationship of the house form to family structure in Berber and Arab areas, and the interaction between these two ideal types. He suggests that North Africa gives us a model for the spread of domestic architecture as part of the baggage brought in by a new hegemonic culture, showing the effects of acculturation in the transformation of the built environment
